Jennifer Duncan

Painting, Mixed Media

My paintings begin from direct observation but then become more about my memory and response to a place. I paint what makes me curious and I work to depict the emotional reaction that first made me stop and decide to further my study. My process involves a natural and intuitive alternation of mark making and painting. I use water-based media including acrylics, gouache, colored pencils, graphite, and collage to create semi- abstracted landscapes and playful collage pieces of familiar objects, shapes and colors from everyday life. For more than 25 years I have worked as an artist, first as co-owner/operator of a specialty painted finishes business for 8 years, and then as a visual artist and teacher in Northern Virginia (and more recently at the Yellow Barn in Glen Echo, MD). I have a studio in my home and at Reston Art Gallery and Studios on historic Lake Anne. I am a long- time member of Great Falls Studios, a member of Studio Gallery DC and a member of the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. My artwork can be seen in private homes, as well as public and corporate spaces in the USA, Italy, and Peru.
