My pieces are oil paints on stretched canvas ranging in size from 10x10 to 36x48. I prepare the canvas with layers of sanded gesso and an undercoat of gamsol and yellow ochre to provide a smooth fast drying surface that supports earthy tones. In the painting of the actual subject, I use elements of cross contour drawing techniques and layer in colors. I will start with colder highlights to start the outline and will add warmer darker colors the block in the shapes and I will alternate this approach to add depth to the subject. I will continue layering colors and adding details until the piece evokes the desired response or sentiment. The final step is to add a layer of varnish to help protect and add a glossy finish to the piece.
